In a major stride towards bolstering English language proficiency among Taiwanese students, the Ministry of Education has launched an innovative chatbot integrated with next-generation large language models. Developed as part of an ambitious initiative, this cutting-edge chatbot is set to transform the way students practice and refine their English speaking skills. Leveraging the power of technology, the chatbot offers an engaging and interactive platform, catering to the unique needs of K-12 students.
The chatbot, aptly named “CoolE Bot,” has rapidly gained popularity since its launch in late December, attracting students from all across the country. CoolE Bot harnesses the Azure OpenAI Service and utilizes advanced Microsoft AI technologies to simulate natural conversations. This groundbreaking feature enables students to select from a wide range of preset conversation topics, ranging from professional occupations such as doctors and photographers, to exciting detective mysteries.

Unlike traditional chatbots, the next-gen AI capabilities of CoolE Bot allow it to generate dynamic responses, adapting to each student’s specific inquiries and speech patterns. Furthermore, the chatbot incorporates cutting-edge speech recognition technology, enabling it to assess students’ pronunciation, accuracy, and fluency levels. This real-time evaluation empowers students to practice speaking English as many times as necessary, progressively improving their scores and language skills.
To ensure a safe and appropriate learning environment, the chatbot incorporates a content filter that prevents conversations from veering into inappropriate topics or language. By utilizing a robust data security infrastructure through Microsoft Azure, all interactions and materials within the chatbot are securely protected, giving parents and educators peace of mind.
Eva Zi Yu Huang, a 13-year-old student from Er Chong Junior High School, expressed her enthusiasm for CoolE Bot, saying, “It is interesting, and I can learn English from it.” This sentiment is echoed by English teacher Claire Mei Ling Wu, who has witnessed firsthand how the chatbot’s “person-to-AI” interface encourages students to overcome their hesitations and engage in meaningful conversations.
Taiwan, with its vision to become bilingual in Chinese and English by 2030, recognizes the importance of equipping its students with strong English language skills to thrive in the global economy. By incorporating CoolE Bot into the existing curriculum, the Ministry of Education aims to provide students with an interactive and effective learning tool that complements traditional teaching methods.
Moving forward, the development team behind CoolE Bot plans to enhance the platform further by introducing avatars and new conversation scenarios. With advancements in AI models, the chatbot’s capabilities will expand to include error correction, ensuring an even more comprehensive language learning experience for students.
As the CoolE Bot gains momentum, an impressive 30,000 students per month are already benefiting from its engaging conversational practice sessions. With a staggering total of one million conversations being conducted monthly, it is evident that this innovative chatbot is transforming the way Taiwanese students master the English language.
The implementation of the CoolE Bot signifies Taiwan’s commitment to nurturing a generation of bilingual individuals who can confidently communicate in the global language of English. Through the seamless integration of technology and education, Taiwanese students are poised to excel in an increasingly interconnected world.
